ARC councillor to join Climaction debate

Last night a large group of Climate Change activists met in Auckland. They decided to stage a "civil disobedience" event near Aotea Square on Global Climaction Day, Saturday 4 November.

This Climaction will involve a public debate in the middle of Queen St to highlight the need for radical alternatives to the car culture which fuels Climate Change.

Robyn Hughes, RAM (Residents Action Movement) councillor on the Auckland Regional Council, was among the participants at the Climaction meeting.

"I will be taking part in the public debate in the middle of Queen St on Climaction Day," said Robyn Hughes.

"RAM sees Climate Change as the main threat to the survival of humanity and many other species on the planet. In the lead-up to the 2007 ARC election, RAM will be promoting free and frequent public transport as a major antidote to Climate Change," said Robyn Hughes.

The Climaction meeting endorsed RAM's strategy of free and frequent public transport for the Auckland region. In addition, the meeting proposed a far more radical decrease in greenhouse gas emissions than the Kyoto Protocols call for.
