An anti –toll pressure group is offering cash for a good reason to toll Auckland’s Western Ring Route.

Highway Robbery Inc is an organisation fighting road tolls as a means to fund roading infrastructure in New Zealand.

The organisation is offering hard cash at today’s Auckland City Council Transport & Urban Linkages Committee meeting to the first Councillor who has a good reason for why we should pay tolls - in addition to the targeted petrol and road taxes Aucklanders already pay - to fund roading infrastructure.

“We offer one thousand dollars to the councillor who comes up with the first good argument for tolls, ” spokesman Dr Hans Grueber says.

“Councillors who support toll are paving the way for the privatisation of our roads. They should go on record and say that.”

Dr Grueber says Transit’s campaign to get Auckland’s Western Ring Route tolled is dishonest.

“People are not told the facts, they are hidden and obscured by an official misinformation campaign.

“The alternative between toll and the timely completion of a major roading project or no toll and a delay of up to 15 years is a Clayton’s choice and amounts to nothing less than blackmail.”
