Playing the right tune

Community Outreach Worker Alan Norman went missing in action a few weeks back when the call up came for another Warratahs’ tour.

The iconic New Zealand country band was touring the country to support their new album called Keep On.

Alan, who everyone calls Al, has been in the band for the last eight years and plays the piano and accordion.

When he’s not on the road with the band, he is part of the Project Margin team at Downtown Community Ministry. Most of his time is spent assisting people find suitable accommodation and making home visits to help them sustain it.

He can’t decide however, which he likes or dislikes the most, playing music and travelling the country or giving practical help to those in need.

“Music’s a big part of me and I get a big thrill out of playing a good set in front of a crowd, but there’s also something deeply satisfying about helping someone out who needs a hand.”

Al’s musical exploits are a hit with many DCM clients who often ask how the band’s going. And he can’t help but smile when someone breaks into the TV jingle “cruising on the Interislander…”
