Wellingtonians find a circus in their stocking!

Wellingtonians find a circus in their stocking!

In the latest annual search for gift ideas adventurous Wellingtonians are adding circus vouchers to their Christmas wishlist.

Circus vouchers are a new initiative from Wellington Circus Trust and TheAcrobatic Design and can be redeemed for lessons in circus skills or circus oriented fitness classes including trapeze, acrobatics, aerial tissu, adagio, aerial dance and circus fit. It is anticipated other classes such as stilting, clowning and juggling may also be available to voucher holders.

“We decided to launch the circus vouchers as we found that people were wanting to give circus classes as surprise gifts but couldn’t take the risk of booking people in without checking they could make the class in question” says WCT spokesperson Eileen McNaughton. “Plus, we think this year people will be looking for gifts with a bit less environmental impact – and giving experiences like circus classes is great for that”

Circus classes have been available in Wellington for several years but this year it has really taken off. 165 people have taken part in classes with WCT this year and a further 75 with TheAcrobatic Design. Students range from unfit beginners to super-fit performers.

“People often find the idea of learning aerials daunting but actually it’s really accessible” says student Amanda Golding. “Even in my first class I was able to achieve things that looked pretty flash”.

Many people associate circus with the traditional carnival style circus but modern circus art is sophisticated and elegant and has been featured in performances such as WOW and Maui. Wellington can boast performers who have performed and coached at such prestigious events as the opening on the Millennium Dome and the Formula One in Montreal.

Circus vouchers will be issued in $50 and $100 denominations. More information is available on www.circus.org.nz or by contacting enrolments@circus.org.nz
