Giacometti Symposium

Christchurch Art Gallery this Sunday (10 December) hosts Encountering Giacometti, a special one-day symposium relating to the exhibition Giacometti: Sculptures, Prints and Drawings from the Maeght Foundation.

Showing exclusively in New Zealand at the Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetu to 25 February 2007, Giacometti: Sculptures, Prints and Drawings from the Maeght Foundation is arguably the most important exhibition of sculpture ever to be seen in New Zealand.

The one-day symposium runs from 10am to 3.30pm, with an entry fee of $25. It will feature lectures by a range of leading experts discussing diverse aspects of Alberto Giacometti’s works and the period in which he lived and worked, says curator of contemporary art curator Felicity Milburn.

The lectures include:
• Giacometti: Impressionism and Drawing – Terence Maloon, Curator of Special Exhibitions at Art Gallery of New South Wales.
• Figuring the Void: Giacometti between Surrealism and Existentialism – Dr Raymond Spiteri, Victoria University of Wellington, Art History Department.
• Giacometti and the Literary World – Dr Emilie Sitzia, University of Canterbury, Art History Department.
• The Magic of Space: sculptor Greer Twiss discusses his works and the influence on these of Alberto Giacometti.

Giacometti: Sculptures, Prints and Drawings from the Maeght Foundation features 35 sculptures, 22 drawings and 22 prints, representing the two most intense phases of the artist’s career – the surrealist period from 1929 to 1934 and the post-war period from 1947 to 1965.
