Auckland City continues heritage protection efforts

Auckland City has scheduled seven more historic buildings as part of its ongoing commitment to protecting the city's architectural heritage.

Plan changes to the central area section of the district plan include the buildings in the city's heritage schedule.

Environment, Heritage and Urban Form Committee chairperson, Councillor Christine Caughey, says the buildings are all worthy of protection.

"These buildings are of significant heritage value to the city and we are looking forward to them being protected for future generations to enjoy.

"They each have a fascinating history and are fine examples of period architecture and it's important that we cherish and celebrate that by offering them stringent protection.

The buildings approved for protection are:

* 13 Albert Street, central city - Yates Building

* 10 Eden Crescent, central city - Hotel Cargen (Trans Tasman Building)

* 140 Hobson Street, central city - Prince of Wales Hotel/Tavern (City Mission)

* 164-168 Hobson Street, central city (Corner Cook Street) - Wong Doo Building (Canvas)

* 44-48 Queen Street, central city - Imperial Building

* 26 Wyndham Street, central city - Former Gas Company Building (Dick Smith Electronics)

* 16 Waterloo Quadrant, central city - Nathan House (Newman Hall)

All of the buildings, except 16 Waterloo Quadrant, are scheduled as category B items. Category B items are given district plan protection against removal, additions or alterations to the building without consent. The Waterloo Quadrant building meets the criteria to be a category A item.
