ARTA and Stagecoach trial CCTV on buses

The Auckland Regional Transport Authority (ARTA) is equipping four buses in the Auckland region with security cameras as a six-month trial of on-bus closed circuit TV (CCTV). The trial, initiated by ARTA and run in partnership with Stagecoach Auckland, will focus on managing bus driver safety and preventing vandalism and graffiti.

Warren Fowler, operations director at Stagecoach, says “We want to ensure our drivers have a safe trip. They shouldn’t have to worry about doing a night trip or a trip in a certain area. With these cameras they know we can track any person that misbehaves. We also want our customers to feel safe.

ARTA’s General Manager Passenger Services Mark Lambert says ARTA is happy to initiate and pay for this trial in association with Stagecoach.

“One of our key responsibilities and focuses is our passengers’ wellbeing. The state-of-the-art CCTV system is a tool to increase safety on the bus for drivers and passengers alike. We want to maintain the safety standards of Auckland’s public transport system.”

ARTA and Stagecoach will monitor the reaction of drivers and passengers to the trial with a potential view to implementation of the system across the network’s bus fleet in future.

ARTA continues to work with the region’s transport operators, local and regional councils and central government to provide an improved transport system that will meet the needs of all Aucklanders.
