Mayoral Candidate selection race on

The Manukau City local body group Peoples Choice has announced it will select its 2007 Mayoral candidate on 20 February at its Annual General Meeting.

Peoples Choice Chairman Hamish Stevens said nominations are open from now until 13 February, and all members will be able to vote in the selection meeting to be held on 20 February at 7.30pm at the Botany Library in the Botany Town Centre.

Mr Stevens said Peoples Choice has decided to run a mayoral candidate as there is a clear need for a common sense candidate from the centre. “Neither the incumbent nor the candidates announced so far look like the answer for Manukau City”.

“Key Manukau concerns are rate increases, traffic, graffiti, and crime, and
Manukau needs effective leadership to address these issues”.

Residents have had enough of excessive rates increases year in and year out. The city needs a mayor who is prepared to curtail the present level of wasteful and extravagant spending. We need real change rather than “more of the same”

Mr Stevens said Peoples Choice will be contesting most council positions, and a Peoples Choice Mayor will have a strong team of councillors with whom they can work. This is something no other candidate can offer.

Peoples Choice is a group of concerned residents from right across Manukau and is non party political.

Peoples Choice won 13 positions on the Council, Community Boards, and the District Health Board in the 2004 local body elections. Peoples Choice backed candidates have also won all three Manukau City by-elections since, making it now the largest elected ticket in Manukau City.

In 2004, former Olympic athlete and Manukau City Councillor was the Peoples Choice mayoral candidate
