Kids celebrate cool books this hot summer

Hundreds of children and their families are expected at the Auckland Domain this Friday to celebrate the completion of yet another successful holiday reading programme at Auckland City Libraries.

The Hot Summer Cool Books summer reading programme has run during summer for over four years, gaining momentum and popularity each year. Over the course of the summer holidays, children aged from 5 – 12 years chose favourite books to read and review.

Over the course of this summer, 1500 children across Auckland city participated in the programme.

Allison Dobbie, group manager of Auckland City Libraries says, “Hot Summer Cool Books is a fantastic council-funded initiative that not only encourages reading and literacy, but also a love of books and learning among children. It’s a fun and worthwhile programme that all our librarians wholeheartedly support, and its success is a testament to their hard work.”

To celebrate the success of the programme and to acknowledge all the children who took part, a Mad Hatter themed party will take place this Friday, 2 February at the Auckland Domain. Children and their families can bring along a picnic to enjoy some great entertainment such as balloon sculptors, storytimes and even a pirate ship. The Auckland Art Gallery and the Auckland Museum will also be holding lots of fun activities.
