Humongous Haggis to Celebrate Port’s History
Leckie’s Butchery are getting ready to produce what they hope will be the largest haggis that New Zealand has ever seen.
The haggis will be presented on Saturday, 24 March at ‘Port Fest - M'Eat Drink and Be Merry’ – a festival to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the first frozen meat shipment to leave New Zealand for the United Kingdom.
Renowned for their fine haggis making abilities, Leckie’s Butchery expect the haggis to weigh over 100 kilograms, which is roughly the size of All Black Anton Oliver, making it the biggest natural haggis that they know of.
“To create a natural haggis of such magnitude we have to use an Ox stomach, instead of the usual sheep’s one. It took us a while, but we’ve managed to find one big enough to do the job,” says butchery manager Grant Millar.
The haggis is expected to take 12 hours to create - from the time of making to the time it is presented at Port Fest. Festival goers will then have the opportunity to sample the haggis as part of the celebration.
“We are delighted to be involved in these landmark anniversary celebrations by producing a dish in the spirit of Dunedin’s Scottish heritage that is sure to feed a large number of people.”
The haggis will be presented on the day at 11am, at Port Otago, where there will be a haggis ceremony to ‘bring the haggis in’, which will incorporate the colour of local Scotsmen and the skill of the local bagpipers.
