Cookie Bakery Café, Masterton

Goodman Fielder Commercial Business Manager, Paul Howley, said Ten O’Clock Cookie Bakery Cafe beat more than 200 shops from around the country to be named the grand national winner.
“Public text voting initially determined the top five shops from each of the nation’s four regions,” Paul said.
“From there our judging panel scrutinized their buns to select a winner from each region and the overall grand national winner.”
Judging criteria included straight and over crosses, application of the bun glaze, crust colour, symmetry and batching of product, crumb softness, crumb texture, even dispersal of fruit, and a good aromatic flavour.
Each bakery also had to use three Champion products, one of which had to be flour.
Judge Rick Burton said that Ten O’Clock Cookie Bakery Café was crowned the overall winner due to its stand out performance in each of the judging areas.
“It was a tight competition and we were really pleased with the overall standard of the buns,” Rick said.
“The quality of the buns has definitely lifted since last year and over the four years the competition has been running.
“Bakers seem to putting more time into their buns and aiming to please their customers.”
