Tsunami alert
For immediate release:
2 April 2007
There was an earthquake at the Solomon Islands at 8.40 am this morning NZT (2 April 2007). It measured 8.1 on the Richter scale.
Based on current information, the initial assessment is that the earthquake is unlikely to have caused a tsunami that will pose a tsunami threat to New Zealand.
The tsunami expert panel in New Zealand indicate that if a tsunami was generated it would have an insignificant impact on New Zealand.
We are in contact with the Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management who are monitoring the situation.
