"Godfather" Of Country, Pat Dugan Recognised
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Christchurch's Pat Dugan Receives a Special Presentation
The Godfather of Country Music, Pat
Dugan had no idea he was to
receive a presentation from
Kiwi Country Club for his dedication
to country music
last night.
Pat was asked to perform at Richmond
Workingmen's Club, Christchurch
along with other
artists.
He had wondered what had happened to the silver
tray used for the
South Island New Zealand Country
Awards for Best Female Vocalist.
This was first awarded
in 1980 by then Modern Club. (Now disbanded).
In fact,
the tray was given to the president, Rosemary Lanyon for
presentation at her discretion and she could not think
of anyone more
deserving than Mr. Dugan!
Up till 2001,
the silver tray had been won sixteen times- of which, nine
winners
being Pat's own students!
His prodigy include
Marianne Stephens, Debbie Mahia,
Tracey Gardyne, Peter
Kearns, Katrina Talbot, Sheryl Higgs, Michael King
and
Martin Colquhoun to name a few!
One of the more recent students, Michelle Fraser was also present at the club.
Dugan first sung at Christchurch Civic Theatre at
the age of 10 and now
at 80 years old, still has a
strong and wonderful voice.
"Pat was one of my guests on
my television show and afterwards
we went to his
concert.../ I will always remember Pat dedicating
'Memories'
to David and I for our wedding anniversary.
It felt so special that we bought
some of CDs for our
limousines", says Sharon Lingham, a keen promoter
and
supporter of New Zealand talent.
In 1990, the Irish / country singer was awarded QSM for his services to country music.
Apart from singing and teaching music, Pat also won
New Zealand finals for
Atlantic Plough Competition.
He also joined his father in trotting horse breeding
industry.
Asked he would like to pass any tips to the
others, he replies,
" A smile costs nothing but makes a
lot of people happy".
He recalls his happiest day being on
7 February 1950 when he
married his true love, Coral.
