Three Ways To Stay Safe This Easter
The AA is encouraging all motorists to do three things to be safe when driving this Easter holiday weekend.
Mike Noon, AA General Manager for Motoring Affairs says if you are driving over Easter then remember to:
* turn off your mobile phone – so you aren’t
distracted;
* turn your car headlights on – so you can
be seen; and
* take regular breaks – so you aren’t
driving when tired.
“Using a handheld mobile phone while you drive is a dangerous combination. You are four times more likely to be involved in an accident – using a mobile when driving is as dangerous as being over the legal alcohol limit.”
“Turning on your car lights whenever you are driving, not just at night, makes your vehicle more visible to other road users. This is especially important in bad weather or low light conditions.”
“Finally, get a good night’s sleep before a long road trip and take a break if you are feeling tired or need to stretch the legs. It’s better to get to take your time and reach your destination late than not to arrive at all because of an accident.”
“These three simple yet effective actions could save your life and be the difference between a weekend in hospital or a weekend on holiday,” says Mr Noon.
During the 2006 Easter holiday period there were 5 fatal crashes and 114 reported injury crashes across New Zealand.
