2007
Rising star Malaysian installation and video artist Vincent Leong has been invited to a residency programme at Sculpture Square from 3 April to 3 May 2007 to interact with the culture and environment of Singapore. He will then stage a site-specific solo exhibition at Sculpture Square’s Chapel Gallery from 4 May to 20 May 2007. Singaporean artist Cheo Chai Hiang will in turn take up residency at Institution MALIHOM, Penang, Malaysia.
Sculpture Square’s Artist Residency enables visual artists to develop their thinking and practice in 3-dimensional art practice and related art forms. This programme is a Sculpture Square initiative that aims to push 3-dimensional arts and related art practices in fresh directions, exploring new grounds.
Our programme promotes the exchange of artistic resources between local and overseas-based artists and also offers opportunities for individual artists or group collaborations to develop their work in each other’s communities through projects in international venues.
Vincent Leong emerged on the art scene in 2005 following his visual art studies at Goldsmiths College, University of London. Selected for the 2005 Three Young Contemporaries, an annual exhibition held at Valentine Willie Fine Art, audiences were introduced to his unique aesthetic that combines a hip, urban awareness with unconventional materials. His video Brucetransformed kung-fu moves into abstracted movements of dots and arrows and comprised a witty take on the 70's classic, Enter the Dragonwith Bruce Lee.
His first solo show , The Fake Showheld at Reka Art Space in 2006 presented a spectrum of works done in the conceptual style of many established figures in Malaysian art. Everything from the paintings to the black-clad gallery girls were fakes. In this way, he turned a mirror on the culture of hype and illusion so prevalent in modern life.
2006 and 2007 has seen Leong invited to participate in regional exhibitions as well as residencies. In 2006 he was awarded a residency in Kwangju and the resulting group exhibition entitled Threshold 13 was exhibited in both Kwangju and Seoul. This year he was selected to participate in Bangkok's Numthong Gallery's 4 Young Contemporariesas well as present a solo exhibition at Valentine Willie Fine Art's new Project Space.
