HeartChildren Nelson Bays launches on May 4
Nelson families with a child who has heart problems will be able to access support through a new local organization, HeartChildren Nelson Bays, to be launched on May 4 at The BBQ Factory - a major sponsor.
Chair Maria Briggs says that many children with heart problems are supported through Auckland's Starship Heart Unit.
³When the families get back home with a little one who has just had surgery they can feel very alone, and support from parents who have had similar experiences really helps,² she says.
A congenital heart defect is the most common serious birth abnormality in New Zealand needing ongoing medical intervention, and Maria says there are 1,000 children a year treated at Paediatric Cardiac Unit at Starship Hospital. There are 40 HeartChildren living in Nelson Tasman.
HeartChildren Nelson Bays aims to support these children and their families at a local level, offer a family liaison service, opportunities to get together, and information and resources.
Anyone who is interested is welcome to attend the launch, which is timed to raise the profile of Heart Children New Zealand in time for the Appeal Week from 20th - 26th May.
