Clendon youth to march
against local liquor outlets

On Saturday, 26 May 2007 young people living in the Clendon community will lead a community hikoi against local liquor outlets. The hikoi will conclude at Te Matariki Clendon Library at approximately 11:00am.
At the conclusion of the hikoi, a public discussion will take place about the availability of alcohol in the Clendon community, and how that affects local residents. The underlying messages of the hikoi will be:
1. the community has had enough of planning rules that enable alcohol to be easily purchased and consumed throughout the Clendon community;
2. the availability of alcohol has a detrimental effect on the public health and safety of families and whanau within the Clendon community; and
3. the young people of Clendon want to lead the challenge to law makers to change the rules governing the sale and purchase of alcohol.
The Member of Parliament for Manurewa, Hon George Hawkins, will address the hikoi. He will be joined by Daniel Newman, a member of the Manurewa Community Board; and a representative of the Clendon Community Support Group (CCSG) (the local organisation leading the youth hikoi initiative).
When: Saturday, 26 May. Hikoi to depart Te Matariki at 10:15am and return at approximately 11am. A free barbeque will be held after march.
Where: Te Matariki Clendon Library, Palmers Road, Clendon.
Who: Clendon youth and local residents.
Media organisations are welcome to attend the hikoi from 10:15am onwards.
