Man seriously injured in a motorcross accident near
Riversdale
The Wellington based Westpac Rescue Helicopter was called to the Wairarapa to assist an injured motorcross rider late this afternoon.
The 48 year old Lower Hutt man was riding a motorcross bike on the beach, near Riversdale, on the Wairarapa's east coast.
The man seriously injured a leg and his pelvis when he was thrown from his bike.
The helicopter, with a Wellington Free Ambulance Paramedic onboard was sent to the accident just after 4pm.
"We were told he hit a rock in the sand which caused his to fall quite hard" says Westpac Rescue Helicopter crewman Logan Taylor. "People on the beach kept him warm and as comfortable as possible until the first ambulance arrived".
An ambulance from Masterton arrived a few minutes before the helicopter and began treating the patient.
The man was transported to the Wellington Hospital Emergency Department where he is currently being treated and assessed.
His injuries are not believed to be life threatening.
