Sailor with Amputated Fingers Flown to Hutt Hospital
The Wellington based Westpac Rescue Helicopter has just transported a sailor from Nelson to Hutt Hospital, where surgeons hope to be able to reattach four amputated fingers.
A 24 year old Nelson man had four fingers amputated in an accident aboard a fishing boat west of Farewell Spit last night. Rescue helicopters were unable to get to the ship at the time of the accident.
The ship reached Nelson in the early hours of this morning and the man was transported to Nelson Hospital. Once he arrived there arrangements were made to urgently transport him to Hutt Hospital.
The Westpac Rescue Helicopter, with a specialist flight nurse from Wellington Hospital, left Wellington about 4:20 am and had the man back to the Avalon Studio Helipad at 6 am. From there he was transported by Wellington Free Ambulance to Hutt Hospital.
No other information about the boat or cause of the accident is available.
