Transit’s decision on new Manukau Harbour crossing interchange welcomed
Manukau City Council supports the decision by Transit NZ to rethink the Gloucester Park Interchange which is part of the Manukau Harbour Crossing Project to build a new bridge over the harbour.
Transit New Zealand has announced it intends building a second bridge without upgrading the Onehunga interchange, to ensure the main project is ready for the 2011 Rugby World Cup.
The agency has accepted a recommendation by Auckland City planning commissioners to withdraw a notice of requirement for land to build a new interchange, after residents complained that it would be too obtrusive.
Manukau Mayor Sir Barry Curtis says the decision is sensible as it gives more time to examine other options
“We want the second bridge to go ahead, but there was a lot of local concern in the community over Transit’s earlier proposal. Taking time to rethink it is a positive decision that will allow planning for the bridge to continue while a more suitable interchange proposal is developed.”
