Tell Transit "Speed Kills"
An extraordinary meeting of the Porirua City Council's City Services Committee may be necessary to remind Transit New Zealand of the arrangement they entered into with the Council, said Councillor Robert Shaw.
Cr Shaw said that on 24 May this year, Mr Taylor and Mr Owen from Transit entered into an agreement with the Council to jointly conduct a review of traffic problems on the Mana Esplanade and St Andrews Road.
"The work is underway. It is totally inappropriate for Transit to disregard this project which we entered into with them in good faith. A project to adjust speed limits isolates one factor in a complex situation that was being dealt with comprehensively."
"By launching another review of their own, Transit is steps outside of the arrangement we had.
Cr Shaw said the community will be appalled at the situation, and the Council will have to act St Andrews Road and the Mana Esplanade are not removed from the review of speed limits.
"Someone should tell Transit that Speed Kills", Cr Shaw added.
