Work To Begin On Wattle Downs Walkway
Manukau City Council will begin construction next month on the next stage of the esplanade walkway at Wattle Downs, from Dalmahoy Place to Kauri Point.
Part of council’s on going commitment to improving access to the coast in response to the Parks Strategy ‘Making Connections’ and council’s District Plan, the walkway will be developed in several stages, have a width of 2 metres and be constructed from grey-tinted concrete.
Furniture will be installed and signage will identify significant archaeological and historical features along the route.
Some residents living along the walkway route have expressed concern over coastal erosion. Manukau Parks have been undertaking annual inspections of the coastline with the aim of identifying which areas may require intervention. Parks staff will work with the consenting agency Auckland Regional Council on erosion works where urgent remediation is required.
Manager of Manukau Parks, Digby Whyte says “Although the erosion protection measures and the construction of the coastal walkway are separate issues and budget allocations, Parks staff will take necessary erosion prevention measures into consideration when constructing the walkway.”
