Local Expo forms Trust
From its beginnings as a
grassroots community initiative in 2004, the organisers of
the Waikato Health & Disability Expo are this year looking
to the future with the establishment of the charitable
Health & Disability Trust.
“This is an event that can really improve people’s lives, and we want to make sure the success we’ve had in previous years continues,” explains Noel Cunneen, one of the original organisers and now chairperson of the Health & Disability Trust.
He expects this year’s event, at the Claudelands Events Centre on Friday, 14 th and Saturday, 15 th September, will encourage even more visitors with the move to include a Saturday.
As in previous years, entry is free and more than seventy exhibitors will offer community services, support, and advice relating to a wide range of health and disability issues including Webhealth, LIFE Unlimited, and Outward Bound.
On the Saturday, the Waikato wheelchair basketball team will be shooting hoops from 11am to 2pm, and offering spectators the chance to try their own hand at this fast-paced sport.
Run by a committee of eight volunteers from the not-for-profit sector, the Expo is now in its fourth year. “We’ve been really lucky to have such a wide range of supporters who see the benefits of having a healthy community, including the Ministry of Social Development, Waikato Primary Health, Hamilton City Council, Trust Waikato, Community Radio Hamilton, and SPAN,” says Noel.
