Inner City Road Closure to be Investigated to Stop Boy Racers

The Hagley/Ferrymead Community Board last night (September 12) approved the notice of motion by Yani Johanson to address local resident’s concerns in regards to late night anti-social behaviour in Churchill St, Cambridge Tce, Fitzgerald Ave and Bealey Ave.

At the same meeting there was a report calling for a parking ban from 10pm – 5am for the Moorhouse / Colombo under the overpass. This was rejected by the Board who decided to meet with affected landowners, users of the site and council staff to look at alternative solutions.

The notice of motion asked the Board to seek an urgent report from Council staff on:

- late night traffic issues in regards to the Bealey Avenue, Fitzgerald Avenue, Churchill Street and Cambridge Tce area

- the possibility of closing either permanently or temporarily Cambridge Tce off Fitzgerald Avenue to address concerns of local residents

- a CPTED assessment of the local area mentioned above with regards to enhancing the lighting and landscaping to reduce anti-social behaviour.

Yani Johanson, Hagley/Ferrymead Community Board Member said today:

“I’m glad the Board has decided to support my notice of motion which shows leadership on this local issue.
Residents and businesses have had their quality of life ruined and been frustrated for months at the lack of a Council response. There has been a massive increase in anti-social behaviour associated to youthful car enthusiasts within this local area and its time to take action. It is entirely unacceptable for this sort of activity to occur in this location and I am committed to working with local people and Council to address their concerns.”

“Banning parking in the Moorhouse / Colombo underbridge would have been a huge mistake as this simply would of transplanted the problem and created further trouble hotspots. I believe that before such a ban is considered, other solutions must be looked at such as improved lighting and landscaping. Ideally there needs to be a dedicated place where young people in cars can hang out that doesn’t interfere with local businesses or residents.
