Beachcare Nursery to Open
Tomahawk Smaills Beachcare Trust is to open its nursery at Smaills Beach, Dunedin on Sunday 30 September 2007.
This project has been a focus of the Trust for the last three years. Its completion will give the trust a base from which to operate and an ongoing supply of native plants for the catchment and dunes.
The trust plans to revegetate and protect dune areas of Smaills and Tomahawk Beaches, as well as undertake riparian planting throughout the catchments.
The nursery will produce up to 4000 native plants each year, eco-sourced from local seed, that were once abundant in the area.
The construction of the Nursery has been made possible by grants from a number of funding bodies, principally Lotteries and the World Wildlife Habitat Protection Fund, as well as locally based funding organisations.
The opening and celebration will begin at 1.30pm and include a karakia, seed-sowing, planting around the nursery perimeter, and a celebratory afternoon tea at 4.00pm.
