What¹s up in the Engine House?
We have ta
moko artist James Webster, in Nelson to perform in Ipurangi,
and
one of our sculptors last year, is now tattooing
people in the old engine
house at Albion Square. It has
been decorated as a lounge as a time-out
space from the
Deutz Lighthouse - which is a far cry from the days in
1866
when the little building was used as a temporary
morgue for the victims of
the Maungatapu murders - a
gruesome goldfields massacre. When the bodies
were found
and brought to town almost the entire population lined up
for a
look. Those Victorians got their thrills in strange
ways.
Don¹t step on your hometown
There¹s a lot
of interest and new houses springing up just like real life
in
Nelson artist Josephine Cachemaille¹s suburb
ŒHometown¹ that¹s part of the
Manifest exhibition. See
if you can you identify the buildings and homes -
or drop
by and get help to add your own home - details in
festival
programme.
