NAF-enews #10 October 18, 2007

Never before has the festival created such a buzz! Tickets are selling at a
record high, crowds turned out for an inspirational Port Nelson Masked
Parade, Kanaki musos got the tempo pumping at the More FM Carnivale and on
it went. Standing ovation after standing ovation - from the quiet last notes
of Tower Voices to the massive energy of Corporacion Tango - the audiences
are loving this feast of festival arts.

Can you believe it? As of Thursday morning there are still almost 50
performances still to come!!

In the Red
Inspiring arts action from young people have drawn the crowds to Westpac Red
Square - beside the Church Steps. Cars have made way for cafes and you have
just until Friday to experience the energy of performance by school and

like the grizzly Maungatapu Murders.

What¹s up in the Engine House?
We have ta moko artist James Webster, in Nelson to perform in Ipurangi, and
one of our sculptors last year, is now tattooing people in the old engine
house at Albion Square. It has been decorated as a lounge as a time-out
space from the Deutz Lighthouse - which is a far cry from the days in 1866
when the little building was used as a temporary morgue for the victims of
the Maungatapu murders - a gruesome goldfields massacre. When the bodies
were found and brought to town almost the entire population lined up for a
look. Those Victorians got their thrills in strange ways.

Don¹t step on your hometown
There¹s a lot of interest and new houses springing up just like real life in
Nelson artist Josephine Cachemaille¹s suburb ŒHometown¹ that¹s part of the
Manifest exhibition. See if you can you identify the buildings and homes -
or drop by and get help to add your own home - details in festival
programme.

Thank You Very Much
Thanks to all those who helped to make Nelson Arts Festival 07 such a
success - from the Nelson City Council for presenting the festival, the
