Three-day Racing Carnival Promises a Good Time

Three-day Racing Carnival Promises a Good Time

Top class premier racing and a range of popular entertainment options over the three days of the Century City Developments 2008 Wellington Cup carnival means there is something to interest everyone.

The opening day of the carnival takes place on the Saturday of Wellington Anniversary Weekend, 19 January, with the Wine and Racing Festival. A wine village will offer wines from Te Kairanga, Loopline Vineyard, Greenhough, Nga Waka, Selaks, Mud House, Auntsfield, Waimea Estate and Milton Vineyards.

The day offers marquee dining, top Wellington cuisine and a popular variety of live music from The Warratahs, Hot Club Sandwich and Phil Costello & the Five O’Clock Shadows. For the purist, this is one of the best days on the racing calendar with five prestige group and listed races, including the richest sprint in New Zealand - the Group One Telegraph Handicap.

Wellington Anniversary Monday, 21 January, is a family day with Destination Summer Holiday Racing. A popular event last year, generously supported by the New Zealand Community Trust, the day promises even more free entertainment and activities for children this carnival. Dorothy the Dinosaur of The Wiggles fame will make a special trans-Tasman appearance.

Saturday 26 January is the day New Zealand’s top horses and jockeys compete for almost $1 million in prize-money, and race-goers turn out in their thousands for the Century City Developments 2008 Wellington Cup.
