Transit to continue with MacKays Crossing work as planned

After careful consideration Transit New Zealand will proceed with the MacKays Crossing pavement work on SH1 as previously planned.

Transit Wellington Regional Manager Graham Taylor says that after a review of the problems that occurred this morning with the pavement work at MacKays Crossing the contractor will be continuing with the remainder of the work required depending on a favourable weather forecast.

Mr Taylor says that a judgement call will be made at 8.00pm this evening to begin the remaining 70m of southbound lane and the northbound lane pavement work at the southern end of the project site.

“If the forecast is fine we will go ahead with the work required based on the latest weather information available at the time.”

The work planned for this evening will take place between 8.00pm and 6.00am with a 30km/h speed restriction. Both lanes will be reopened at 6.00am tomorrow morning with a 50km/h speed restriction.

Should there be any delays created by slow vehicles travelling through the site, the contractor will open both of the southbound lanes over the rail bridge to help clear any queues that may build up, as occurred this morning.

Further chip sealing work tomorrow during the day will be carried out on one of the southbound lanes over the crossing itself between the hours of 9.00am and 4.00pm.

The sealing work will continue next week with road users updated on our progress at that time.

A final seal of the area will be completed after the Easter holiday break concluding all work to the MacKays Crossing Project.
