Students re-write volunteering
Students re-write volunteering
What’s so different about a bunch of students swilling coffee on a Friday morning? Nineteen AUT Communications students will be putting down their lattes to launch a new project ‘Addressing Volunteering’ on Friday 11th April. The students will pick up their pens and head off over the next 3 months to investigate Auckland’s volunteering scene.
“Most people think volunteering is about stuffing envelopes” says Volunteering Auckland’s Regional Manager Cheryll Martin. “We have challenged AUT’s budding journalists to reveal the amazing range of volunteering work within our membership of almost 300 not for profit community organizations.”
The young journalists may be wading through the Waitakeres with conservation volunteers, catching up with volunteer rugby coaches or interviewing youth mentors. Volunteering Auckland hopes that the aspiring journalists will raise awareness through the local media about the diversity of opportunities for volunteering.
The AUT Communications students will be launching the project on Friday 11th April 11.00-11.30am at The Counter Café ground level of WF Building on Lorne St CBD. Media are invited to the launch to interview participating students and faculty staff. Come and see what a group of students stuffed into a giant envelope looks like.
