Wellington City Council Broadband Initiatives Delight Citylink

CityLink applauds the Wellington City Council for putting in place some simple, low cost measures to assist the commercial development of broadband services in the city, CityLink Managing Director Neil de Wit said today.

City Link provides dedicated fibre services and PublicLAN Broadband to business & Government which gives customers the simplest & fastest broadband networking.

“Council initiatives such as shallow and micro trenching, and their decision to allow increased availability of poles, buildings, unused pipes and ducts and micro-trenching trials, will pave the way for increased competition from CityLink and others.

It has been estimated changing the council roading rules to allow for shallow trenching could slash the cost of laying underground fibre cables from $300 to $130 - $40.

“What the council has done is step back from being a hands on player in the market but still coming up with some infrastructural initiatives and regulatory solutions that support the increased development of broadband services for city customers. This will make expansion much easier and will increase competition which will provide the best deal for broadband customers,” Mr de Wit said.
