Council rent rise decision must be based on sound information

The Coalition for Fair Rents applauds the move by Christchurch City councillors to revisit their decision to increase social housing rents by 24%.

“We acknowledge the courage that the councillors are demonstrating”, said Coalition spokesperson Sharon Torstonson. “Far from being a ‘flip-flop’ as one councillor has suggested, it demonstrates a Council prepared to show true leadership when they are willing to reconsider their decision in order to get it right.”

This is something that Council must not get wrong. We can have all the outward appearances of a flourishing, world-class city, but if we are treating unfairly some of our most vulnerable citizens, the elderly, the ill and the disabled, then we are a failing city. It is unfair to penalise tenants today by giving them a massive rent increase in order to meet uncertain needs in the future.

Agreeing on a more moderate increase now will give councillors the time they need to make a final decision based on all the facts. There is more work to be done on thefigures, models and budgets, and there is more work to be done in talking with Council’s partners and others with an interest in seeing Council provide truly affordable housing.
