Tranz Metro Announce Reopening of Improved Epuni Station

Epuni station on the Upper Hutt line will be open for passengers again before the end of July, Tranz Metro announced. After building and clean up work, passengers will be able to catch trains as normal while a new and improved shelter is erected.

“Epuni is one of our oldest stations and had seen better days,” comments Ross Hayward, group general manager passenger rail. “Rather than repair the existing structure, we have taken the decision to replace it with a more modern glass shelter and improved lighting for passenger comfort and safety.”

The station has been closed as a precautionary measure since 15th May, after a regular safety check indicated the possible presence of asbestos traces in a passenger area.

Thorough testing carried out by independent experts has discovered the presence of asbestos in some parts of the station, but all air tests have proved negative. Testing has also been carried out in the subway under the station and areas around the station, which have also failed to find any asbestos. Tests were completed yesterday (June 5th).

“We have hired some of the best in the business to make sure we are doing the right thing,” adds Mr Hayward. “I can assure passengers and staff that we wont open Epuni station until it is clear and given a clean bill of health. We expect that to be before the end of July but I can reassure everyone that Epuni station will be reopening.”
