Onehunga Foreshore Announcement Welcomed
"Auckland City Council's unanimous commitment in principle to the range of measures designed to enhance the Onehunga foreshore is a positive and timely step," said Maungakiekie Labour candidate Carol Beaumont.
"The Onehunga Enhancement Society (TOES), the Maungakiekie Community Board, Labour MPs and Councillors have been working hard to encourage the Auckland Regional Council, the Auckland City Council and the New Zealand Transport Authority to seize the chance presented by the extension of SH20 to rectify the damage done in the 1970s and to create an important recreational space at the gateway to Auckland City."
"I now urge Auckland City Council to allocate the resources necessary to make the commitment in principle a reality."
"I will continue working with my colleagues to push for adequate resources. Phil Goff and I recently had a positive meeting with the ARC Chair Mike Lee to seek the Regional Council's support. The New Zealand Transport Authority has already indicated their willingness to assist with some funding."
"To maintain momentum Phil Goff will be calling the parties to a high level meeting in September."
