A New Home For Crossways

Kia Ora,

Please find an update on the “Save Crossways” campaign;

Following the sale of Crossways Community House in Mt Victoria in August to a private buyer, the doors will close forever to the community on 7 October 2008.

The New Crossways Community Trust has taken out an 11 year lease on the first floor of a building at 6 Roxburgh Street and will officially begin operating as a new community facility on the 16 October.

Mr. Southworth, Chair of the Trust said "the battle to Save Crossways has had a positive spin-off with money raised by the campaign to now pay for the new center’s lease".

"Our one great regret is that we could not find somewhere with an outdoor play area so that the crèche could join us too. The only possible place to house all of us was the Congregational Church in Cambridge Terrace but the church turned the crèche down because it could not agree to the physical alterations the crèche required".

Housing NZ has agreed to lease a building in Newtown, on a temporary basis to house the crèche and there are legal issues to continue to work through with the council in order for the crèche to lease the Bandoliers building on the town belt.

It is expected that most groups from Crossways will eventually be housed in the new centre. Community organizations interested in using this space are invited to contact the trust.

The trust and crèche will be moving out of Crossways on Saturday 4 October and working bees will be held for the crèche, Sunday 5 October 10am; and for the trust to prepare the new community centre on the weekend of the 11th and 12th of October.
