Tawa Commends Police for Active Policing in Eastern Suburbs.

“While the raw statistics indicate a rise in violent crime in the Counties-Manukau police district, I applaud the recent active policing initiatives that have had a significant impact on criminal activities, and so ensure we have safer communities in the Botany electorate.” said Botany Labour candidate, Koro Tawa, today.

“I was impressed with the programmes outlined by Police Commissioner, Howard Broad, at the recent Asian Community Safety Expo at the Fo Guang Shang Buddhist Temple on Saturday. Commissioner Broad informed the audience that in all but one of the recent violent crimes in Manukau, the criminals had been arrested and were in custody. This shows that policing under a Labour Government is proactive and effective.” said Mr Tawa.

Programmes like Problem Solving Policing which identifies new or long term problems in the area and strategies for dealing with them, Operation Snap (specifically designed to ensure the safety of women who have been targets for handbag snatchers in the Botany area ), have resulted in a decline in the number of such incidents in local shopping malls are to be commended.

Mr Tawa agrees with the Botany Community Chairperson, Dyann Calverley, who also attend the Asian Community Safety Expo, that recent changes to the legislation of awarding new liquor licenses that allowed for community input, especially that of local community boards, would limit the accessibility of alcohol. This, coupled with an active Police presence, will serve to further reduce violent crime in Manukau and make Botany a safer community to live in.

“I support the Minister of Police, Annette King, in that too often violent crime becomes a political football played by opportunists and that, as a result, the community does not get to see that the Police are making our communities safer places to live in.” said Mr. Tawa.
