Kawakawa Bay residents to move back home

Residents of the five houses below the Kawakawa Bay slip have been given the all clear to return to their homes.

Because of the danger posed by the landslip, Manukau City Council asked these residents to evacuate in late August.

Geotechnical experts have advised the council now that the slip has been stabilised because of better weather and some drainage work, it is safe for residents to move back to their homes. The earlier risk from a potential major landslip has significantly decreased.

Manukau City Council Economic Director Rick Walden acknowledges that it’s been a stressful time for the families involved.

“I want to thank everybody for their patience and cooperation during this difficult time. I’m sure they will be pleased to get home and back among their own belongings.”

News of the residents returning home comes a week after the road was reopened.

Work is now continuing on a long-term solution to permanently remove the risk from the landslip so the road can open in both directions. This should be completed during the summer.
