Dominion Road Cyclists Turn Out In Force

Media Release
19th February 2009

Dominion Road Cyclists Turn Out In Force For Auckland City Council’s Bike To Work Breakfast

Christopher Dempsey, Chair of Eden Albert Community Board led an enthusiastic group of early morning cyclists along Dominion Road to the Bike to Work Breakfast in the Viaduct today, with assistance from NZ Police who escorted the group, while Matthew Hinton from Maunsell Consulting bought up the rear.

“It was a great turnout of cyclists and I’m pleased that a number of cyclists joined up with us along the way. Meeting the Frocks on Bikes at the top of Queen Street was a highlight – a group of women showing us that cycling can be classy.” said Mr Dempsey.

The annual Bike to Work event organised by Auckland City Council highlights the advantages of biking to work, underscoring Council’s commitment to supporting cycling infrastructure.

This year’s event attracted 850 cyclists to a fantastic new location by the waterfront; breakfast, toast, tea/coffee were provided, along with music. The grand draw for the grand prize of a top of the line mountain bike donated by Avanti Bikes from Mt Eden Road was won by Joel Cayford, ARC Councillor and keen cyclist.

It is disappointing however that Auckland City Council failed to acknowledge the Dominion Road group of cyclists, the largest group of cyclists making their way to the event, in its press release about the Bike To Work Breakfast. “Despite seeking clarification from Auckland City Council since yesterday afternoon, no response has been forthcoming” says Mr Dempsey. “My next action will be to serve an Official Information Act request on the CEO.”
