PAK ‘n SAVE court victory welcome news

PAK ‘n SAVE court victory welcome news for Glenfield residents.

News of the High Court decision in favour of Foodstuffs, in its battle against Progressive Enterprises to open a PAK ‘n SAVE supermarket in Wairau Road, will be welcomed by residents of Glenfield and surrounding areas.

Residents have strongly supported Foodstuffs as they believed that Progressive, owner of Woolworths, Countdown and Foodtown, was taking advantage of the Resource Management Act to prevent its commercial rivals from opening a large low-cost supermarket in competition.

The so-called ‘supermarket war’ between the two retailing giants has been one of the catalysts for recently proposed changes to the Resource Management Act to close the many loopholes which have been exploited to achieve commercial advantage.

This long battle has been costly for all parties, Foodstuffs, North Shore City Council and its ratepayers, and Progressive – although Progressive has been able to protect its profits by delaying the PAK ‘n SAVE supermarket for many years.

Glenfield residents look forward to not only having this new option for their supermarket shopping, but also to the job opportunites this new supermarket will provide.

Residents congratulate Foodtsuffs on its perserverance in this long battle.
