Nelson Trolley Derby Gears Up


Wet or fine the South Canterbury Finance Nelson Trolley Derby will go ahead on Saturday.

There¹s a low over the country but Nelson forecaster John Mathieson is optimistic that rain won¹t strike Nelson til later on Saturday afternoon. And derby coordinator Antony Hodgson said even if it rains the derby will go ahead.

³This event is all about racing and about the¹ can do it¹ spirit of Kiwis,² he said. ³The drivers are keen as mustard and even if we get a bit of rain it will add to the challenge without compromising safety in any way.² ³

Our advice is get out of the house, bring a brollie and see some great action on Collingwood Street for a great cause ­ Child Cancer,² Antony said. Heats start at 10.30am, finals are from 1.30pm, there is a ride-through of people in Edwardian dress on penny-farthings, moto-cross demonstrations, a demo race from the Smith and Son Wheelbarrow Classic and the inaugural Child Cancer Running of the Balls where numbered balls will roll down the hill and into a capture chute at the bottom, with some great prizes at stake. Balls can be registered for a minimum donation of $2 at various outlets around Nelson or on the day.

Other new features this year include more sponsored prizes for individual events and a kids¹ design competition for a Œdream trolley¹ to be built with the help of a mentor for the 2010 derby. The Nelson Trolley Derby is on Saturday 28 Feb, 10am ­ 3.30pm in Collingwood Street, central Nelson. Registrations have now closed with 88 drivers registered in 69 trolleys.
