Nelson Trolley Derby Gears Up

Wet or fine the South Canterbury Finance Nelson Trolley Derby will go ahead on Saturday.

There¹s a low over the country but Nelson forecaster John Mathieson is optimistic that rain won¹t strike Nelson til later on Saturday afternoon. And derby coordinator Antony Hodgson said even if it rains the derby will go ahead.

³This event is all about racing and about the¹ can do it¹ spirit of Kiwis,² he said. ³The drivers are keen as mustard and even if we get a bit of rain it will add to the challenge without compromising safety in any way.² ³

Our advice is get out of the house, bring a brollie and see some great action on Collingwood Street for a great cause Child Cancer,² Antony said. Heats start at 10.30am, finals are from 1.30pm, there is a ride-through of people in Edwardian dress on penny-farthings, moto-cross demonstrations, a demo race from the Smith and Son Wheelbarrow Classic and the inaugural Child Cancer Running of the Balls where numbered balls will roll down the hill and into a capture chute at the bottom, with some great prizes at stake. Balls can be registered for a minimum donation of $2 at various outlets around Nelson or on the day.

Other new features this year include more sponsored prizes for individual events and a kids¹ design competition for a Œdream trolley¹ to be built with the help of a mentor for the 2010 derby. The Nelson Trolley Derby is on Saturday 28 Feb, 10am 3.30pm in Collingwood Street, central Nelson. Registrations have now closed with 88 drivers registered in 69 trolleys.
