Improved Ride Share Scheme unveiled on Campus

Improved Ride Share Scheme unveiled on Massey Albany Campus

In response to a number of complaints by both staff and students regarding the scarcity of decent car parks on the Albany campus, the Albany Students’ Association in conjunction with Massey University and the Auckland Regional Transport Authority are pleased to unveil the newly improved Ride Share scheme.

Formerly known as Car-Pooling, the original scheme was established by the ASA in 2004 as a means of both showing a proactive approach towards their commitments to being an environmentally friendly campus and also to ensure that those who were already carpooling were rewarded with superior parking spaces in close proximity to the most commonly utilised buildings on campus. The scheme is free of charge and is already widely utilised by students.

The newly expanded Ride Share car-parking area includes 5 disability car parks and 58 car parks specifically reserved for those who choose to opt into the Ride Share initiative. The amount of motorbike parks surrounding the Ride Share area will also be increased to 12-15, which will make parking at Massey far more accessible for those who choose not to use a car as their form of private transport.

The expansion of the Ride Share area hopes also to eliminate the problem of excessive car clamping on campus after a spate of incidents which have been widely contested by both staff and students

President of the ASA, Rawa Karetai, is thrilled with the amendments made to the previous carpooling system. “I am ecstatic that we have made a great change to the car pooling system.” said Karetai. He is confident that the continuous lobbying by the ASA was a key factor in improving the Ride Share scheme and that the amendments made to the Ride Share scheme will benefit both staff and students alike.
