Global Family Fun Day, 25 April, Anzac Day
Global Family Fun Day, Saturday 25 April, Anzac Day
Peace and fun are to the fore in the afternoon of Anzac Day this year, with the Nelson Multi-Ethnic Council holding a Global Family Fun Day at Victory Square.
Organiser, sport and rec student Akiko Miyamoto, says the day will have an emphasis on people of all ages and all cultures getting together to have fun
“We have an annual day like this in Japan,” she says. “It is different from Race Unity Day where we celebrate our different cultures – for the Global Family Fun Day we all take part in activities together.”
Akiko says everyone in Nelson and Tasman is welcome to attend, especially new migrant families.
“Anzac Day honours all those who sacrificed so much so that we could live in peace and harmony,” she says. “We are tying that in with our efforts to bring people of all ethnicities and ages in our community together to be active and have fun.”
The activities will run from 1-3.30pm and include a family relay race, a ‘centipede race’ and a tug of peace. The event is sponsored by the Nutrition & Physical Activity programme and the emphasis is on fun rather than competition, but there are prizes for events and for people who arrive by bike.
The Global Family Fun Day is at Victory Square on Anzac Day, 25 April 2009, 1pm - 3.30pm. All children under eight years must be accompanied by an adult. Catch the Big Red Bus from Richmond, Stoke, Tahunanui or Trafalgar St.
The event is also supported by the Nelson City Council, Way2Go, Settlement Support and Sport Tasman.
