State Highway 2 Rimutaka Hill Road
closed by snow
The NZ Transport Agency would like to advise anyone travelling on SH2 to the Wairarapa or Wellington that the Rimutaka Hill Road has been closed by snow.
NZTA Regional Highways Manager Rob Whight says the road was closed at about 1pm as a result of expected heavy snowfall at the summit of the hill.
“We appreciate that this will have an impact on people who regularly travel over Rimutaka Hill so they should consider alternative transport options or stay where they are until the road reopens,” Mr Whight says.
He is unsure when the road will reopen as it is still snowing, but NZTA staff are monitoring the conditions and will update motorists later this afternoon about the extent of the closure.
“We are doing our best to ensure that the road is reopened as soon as it is safe to do so and ask for everyone’s patience in the meantime,” Mr Whight says.
