Council thank public for Walking Strategy feedback

Council thank public for Walking Strategy feedback

June 23, 2009

North Shore City Council would like to thank all those who wrote submissions on the draft North Shore City Walking Strategy.

A total of 56 public submissions were received over a one month consultation period ending March 16, 2009.

Public feedback was very positive and reflected council’s thinking while feedback helped to clarify and separate out some of the issues.

Some of the more significant modifications made as a result of public consultation include:

• Greater emphasis placed on safety with it now added as a separate outcome with detail around pedestrian and personal safety
• Enhanced document layout that improves connections between related areas of information and provides a reduction in text repetition.
• A new section added relating to issues and solutions, including the provision of facilities, to provide more detail and improve understanding.

Council resolved to adopt the revised North Shore City Walking Strategy 2009 at the Infrastructure and Environment Committee meeting on 7 June 2009.

Work will soon begin on the Walking Implementation Plan which will give effect to the goals and actions outlined within the strategy document.

This next stage will include working pro-actively with walking and recreational groups to encourage and support walking activities.

Pedestrians can expect progressive improvements to footpaths and pathways across the city, improving safe access to local schools, parks and beaches.

The final Walking Strategy document, along with a feedback summary report, will be made available for public viewing on the council website from July 1.

Finally – the lucky winner of the $250 Rebel Sport voucher was Becky Britton (appearing with senior transport planner Tracy Wheeler in attached photo).

Becky says she walks everywhere and feels it is important that people, and women especially, are able to do so safely day or night.
