Circus may sound like it is something you go and see in a tent, but it turns out it is actually a fun fitness activity as well!

“Have a go!” day is an afternoon of circus workshops on the 5th of July, held by the Wellington Circus Trust: a group of local people who are passionate and excited about all things circus.

These workshops are a way for anyone who is curious to try something more exciting than the average gym class to have a go at some of the activities and skills on the circus menu. The WCT run a regular timetable of classes, listing things like Acrotumble; Acrobalance; Aerials for Beginners through to Advanced; Hula Hoop and Circus Fit.

All of these sound very interesting, but what is Acrotumble? As it turns out, acrotumble is a unique blend of acrobatics and tumbling. Aerials covers things like Aerial Tissu and Trapeze, but you can also branch out into Spanish Web and Aerial Ring. Circus fit is essentially circuit training on circus equipment plus conditioning to help you strengthen up for more circus fun... no experience is necessary!

Circus is often remembered as the “traditional circus” of tents and animals – the WCT is helping to change this perception and create more accessibility to circus in the Wellington community. These days it’s all about wonderful acrobatic skills. The humans are the performers and the athletes. New circus can be a fantastic way to build strength and muscle tone, and it sure is fun!

The trust has a strong component of adult participants and kids classes, as well as a new Teen Circus class. Kids and Teens are circus-crazy; they love the fitness and the challenges of the activity, and also love the opportunity to perform in the annual Circus Proms at the Michael Fowler Centre.

Alice Capper-Star, a mainstay of the WCT, is keen for people to get to know circus as a recreational option that can really spice up their lives. The "Have a Go!" afternoon of workshops costs $30.00 and is open to anyone, regulars or total new comers on Sunday July 5th, from 1 – 5pm at the Fuse Circus Factory, 148c Park Rd, Miramar.

To find out more about “Have a go!” and the new term of circus classes, contact Alice Capper-Star at info@circus.org.nz

The next term of Circus Classes begins July 20, at the Fuse Circus Factory, 148c Park Rd, Miramar. All booking information can be found at www.circus.org.nz
