Recession hits Auckland City Mission Winter Appeal
The recession has hit donations to the Auckland City Mission’s Winter Appeal.
“We’ve had around 15% more donors than we had last year which is great,” says City Missioner Diane Robertson. “But overall, the size of the average donation so far is down around 20% at the same time as we are having to respond to more people seeking assistance.”
“Aucklanders know that lots of people are having a hard time, which is why I think we are seeing more people donating. But at the same time, many of those who are giving are also having to manage their own budgets more carefully. They’re generously giving what they can, but on average they are giving less than last year.”
Diane Robertson says the decline in the average amount of the donation applies across the spectrum.
“Overall, we’re down about $20,000 at this stage on this time last year..”
Diane Robertson said that donations of food and clothing are still coming in but that the Mission desperately needs monetary donations as well.
“If you’ve planning to make a donation, now is the time to do it.”
