Retail 2020 - trends for the future
Australian Centre for Retail Studies

Research faculty from The Australian Centre for Retail Studies - Monash University, Melbourne gave a briefing on their latest report, "Retail 2020: The future of retail. Insights from NZ and Australia," in Auckland this week.

Key trends in retail were identified as:

1. Low price everything is on the way out - it's unsustainable with increasing costs including manufacturing, transport, distribution, marketing, product safety etc

2. Excessive product choice is also on the way out - consumers are looking for simplicity, and there isn't enough shelf space for all every product.

3. Technology a big influencer - RFIDs soon to be on every product; mobile shopping, dynamic pricing, interactive kiosks etc

4. Consumer Confusion -too much choice, flight to simplicity. Need to educate customers on product benefits.

5. Tactics for managing the recession include consolidation, "premiumisation", and differentiation. Get fashionable - what customers want and aspire to, they'll still pay for!

The report is available at $695 (earlybird rate until 1 September, 2009, then $995) from www.buseco.monash.edu.au

Parnell Inc. members are warmly invited to our next business networking event, to be hosted by Boulgaris Maguire at 170 Parnell Road (behind Heard Park) on Tuesday4 August, from 5.30pm. We'll have details of what Michael and Wayne have planned for the evening next week.

Meanwhile, now that we're Parnell, the creative quarter, it's time for a new name for this event and perhaps a new format. We'd love to hear your ideas for a name and how we can make these monthly get togethers irresistible. Email debbie@parnell.net.nz

Daffodil Day fundraising
National Bank Parnell needs your support

The Cancer Society's Daffodil Day (Saturday 29 August) is one of The National Bank's most prominent and important sponsorships. Staff have wholeheartedly supported Daffodil Day for over 18 years now, and The National Bank is proud to be Principal Sponsor of such a worthwhile cause.

Daffodil Day proceeds are allocated to cancer research, prevention and education. Each year around 17,000 New Zealanders are diagnosed with cancer, and 1 in 3 people will be affected by cancer.

Parnell branch would like to seek the support of fellow business owners in the main street and would appreciate anything from a voucher or item from your business to be auctioned off or raffled off through our branch. Our raffles go on sale on August 3 - just a week away!

If this is not possible, then perhaps a monetary contribution may be appropriate. Full promotion of where the contribution has come from will be advertised through our branch. Thank you.

Dial 111 to report suspicious people
Call Police immediately - not Parnell Inc!

A number of people have contacted Parnell Inc recently to report people acting very suspiciously: snooping around the rear of buildings and even stealing items.

In these instances, please call the police immediately. Don't be afraid to dial 111: police will quickly determine the nature of your call and deal with it appropriately, including despatching a car to Parnell if necessary.

After you've alerted police, if the suspicious person has left your area, please call Parnell Inc. and we will broadcast text a description to members via our Shoplifter Text Alert service. (Parnell retailers, you are welcome to sign on to this free service. Email Parnell Inc. at info@parnell.net.nz)

It is always worthwhile to lodge a report with police. At the very least it creates a record of such instances that can help police respond to Parnell's needs more effectively in the future.
