SH1 remains closed near Puhoi after fatal accident
The NZ Transport Agency continues to advise travellers between Auckland and Northland to use SH16 as an alternative after a fatal accident near Puhoi blocked both lanes of SH1.
The NZTA says it expects to re-open SH1 later this afternoon.
One person died when a car and a logging truck collided around midday, closing both lanes of the highway.
The accident has also closed the Northern Gateway Toll Road.
Drivers heading north can access SH16 from the Northwestern Motorway [SH16] through Helensville, or from the Silverdale interchange on SH1 near Orewa. Southbound drivers are being diverted to Auckland along SH16 from Wellsford, and from Woodcocks Road at Warkworth.
Motorists will be kept informed of traffic conditions and alternative routes with roadside electronic messages and radio updates.
