We are advising people in low lying coastal areas in Canterbury to be prepared to move to higher ground if required and have a radio and/or mobile telephone and essential items such as personal documents, medication, glasses and hearing aids with them at all times.
Until more information is available, people should avoid coastal areas, including beaches and river mounts from 11:00 a.m.
A situation update will be provided at 10:00 a.m. this morning (Wednesday, 30 September 2009).
