Auckland Civil Defence to conduct a review of tsunami response
In the wake of the devastating tsunami generated by the 8.3 earthquake that occurred in the Samoa Islands region on Wednesday 30 September, the Chair of the Auckland Civil Defence Emergency Management Group, Cr. Derek Battersby (QSM) has requested an independent review of the tsunami response in Auckland.
The Auckland Civil Defence Emergency Management Group carried out it’s activation procedures on receipt of the first Tsunami Warning: Threat to New Zealand at 7:39am, and remained activated until the potential threat was cancelled at 4:10pm.
“In my opinion our emergency services and civil defence staff did a good job. Our plans and processes were certainly tested that day, and we have learned there are some things we can do better in the future. It is vital that in events such as this the public get clear and timely direction from us about what we need them to do to ensure their safety,” says Cr. Battersby.
Independent review will be conducted by: Steve McDowell - Emergency Planning Limited (EPL)
