Wilson And Alaric Ii Fly Home For Victory

New combination Simon Wilson and Alaric II showed they will be a force to reckon with over the coming season with a win in the horse grand prix at the Wairarapa A & P Show in Carterton today (Sunday).

The Waipukurau team headed off 20 other combinations to take the honours with a double clear round, beating home the four strong jump-off field by .54 of a second.

Settling for second was Amy Roydhouse (Hastings) and Roxborough who finished double clear in 46.03, followed by Julie Davy (Hastings) and Air Hill the Rajah also double clear in 48.75.

Fourth placed Doug Isaacson (Dannevirke) and Brother Brown were the fastest, stopping the clock at 40.66 but paid for their speed with a rail.

The pony grand prix also attracted good numbers with 27 starters and eight through to the jump-off over the Neil Thorburn (Dannevirke) designed course. Taking the win was Tayla Mason (Wellington) on Limerick's Black Samba, who had the luxury of being last to go, leaving up all the rails and coming home in 36.60 seconds. Second placed Logan Massey (Dannevirke) and Kickin the Clouds had set the pace early in the jump-off but their 36.97 just wasn't enough to hold the crown.

Competitors at the 132-year-old three day show faced all sorts of weather conditions – from abysmal on Friday through to a stunning day to finish on Sunday.
